HUM 101 Cognitive Bias Discussion

Cognitive Bias   In our everyday lives we are tasked with attempting to think critically without using cognitive biases. It is something that every human in this world has struggled with, and something that we need to think about daily. From the time that we are born we see the world in our own ways, asking ourselves questions such as: “Why me?”, “How come time is flying by so fast?”, and last but not least, “Why does nothing ever good happen to me?”. These are all classic examples of cognitive bias. Cognitive bias is an error in the way we think due to the way we perceive the world around us and it is generally a way for the human mind to simplify the things we see everyday. To grow personally and professionally, one must rid themselves of cognitive bias and understand the world we live in from an objective standpoint. Ridding myself of cognitive bias also relates to me and my personal goals of becoming a Software engineer who can develop and innovate others lives through technology.    Cognitive bias can hinder you drastically later on in life if not addressed at an early stage. The reason for that, is because cognitive bias often leads to a distorted version of thinking. For example, the beliefs in conspiracy theories that have no evidence to support them (Cherry, 2020). There have been studies that show that developing cognitive bias can sometimes be a result of childhood trauma or other various types of trauma in a person’s life. Another study conducted in 2021 by the Public Library of Science, which included 9 countries and over 21 different studies of cognitive behavior, showed that the development of cognitive bias does correlate casually with trauma in people (Croft et al., 2021, 16). However, it is noted in their studies that there are currently not enough developed psychological studies to show that trauma is directly linked to developing cognitive bias (Croft et al., 2021, 16).
